Between 1850 and the early 20th Century, Paris was the center of the art world, and women artists from other countries in Europe arrived to join their French and American counterparts. They all took advantage of the museums, art academies, and dynamic urban life of the newly redesigned capital. Although not as celebrated as their male colleagues, these women took on modern subjects and experimented with scenes from private life, drawing upon their social differences as a source of artistic inspiration. They played a pivotal role in the emergence of both Impressionism and Symbolism. This presentation will introduce you to these determined women who overcame immense obstacles to create vibrant and innovative works.

About Our Presenter: Janet Mandel taught in New Jersey’s public schools for 32 years, the last eighteen of which were at Columbia High School in Maplewood, where she taught English, art history, and World Languages and Cultures.
