Folklore, Fiction, and Facts that matter: Storytelling with Incarcerated Youth.
March 28, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Joanne Epply-Schmidt – Speaker
When Joanne accepted the challenge of serving as a Storyteller in a literacy program for Maximum Security Incarcerated Male Youth, she did not know what to expect. The cultural difference between her world and theirs was significant. The gulf between her day-to-day experience and theirs was vast.
Come hear Joanne speak about telling stories to young people of integrity and insight, honesty and hope, generosity and deep compassion–those for whom adversity has fostered wisdom and an understanding of the value of true grit.
Joanne Epply-Schmidt, an ordained Episcopal Priest, served for 10 years at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Pennington, specializing in the creation of innovative children’s and youth ministry. Her career took an interesting turn when she became a professional Storyteller and teaching artist working primarily in the NJ Youth Detention System utilizing the art of the oral tradition–Storytelling–to engage incarcerated young people personally and intellectually with world folklore and great stories. She has performed and taught storytelling to young people in private and public secondary schools, and to adults of all ages in seminaries, churches, and continuing education settings. She continues to teach Storytelling in the US and Canada concurrently with her present position as Associate Rector of Trinity Church in Princeton.
