Pearl S. Buck was born in 1892 to American missionary parents. She spent much of the first four decades of her life in China, giving her a deep and rare familiarity with Chinese language, culture, and daily life. In this program, discover the rare and intriguing story of Pearl Buck’s early life. During her time in China, Ms. Buck witnessed extreme poverty, social injustice, and political upheaval during a time of great turmoil in China. These events left a strong impression on her and shaped her humanistic worldview.

About Our Presenter: Samantha Freise is the curator at Pearl S. Buck National Historic Landmark in Perkasie, PA. Freise received a B.S. in Historic Preservation and B.A. in History from Southeast Missouri State University. She also graduated with distinction from the University of the Arts with a M.A. in Museum Education. Freise is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution in which she participates on the local, state, and national levels bringing awareness to historic preservation, American history, and service to veterans. She has a wide variety of experience working in museums and historic sites in Missouri, Pennsylvania, and the United Kingdom.
